Super Easy Purse - Perfect Beginner Sewer Project

1.jpg
In this episode Michelle blunders through making a purse. One that she has made dozens of times but has never tried to show someone else how to make. Despite the minor goofs you will still be able to make a purse of your own. To follow along, gather these materials:
  • 1 1/4 yard of fabric for outside of purse
  • 1 1/4 yard of fabric for inside, preferably coordinating fabric
  • sewing machine
  • thread
  • large piece of paper to draw a pattern
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • fabric scissors
  • pinking shears
  • pins
Also, if you have already watched the show you may have noticed a tiny problem with the pattern. Because I sew the side up with 1/4 inch seam allowance, the right side is 1/4 of an inch skinnier than the left. I don't think it matters that much and I certainly can't see it in the finished piece. But you may want to adjust your pattern accordingly. Remember, if you would like to own this purse just leave me a comment. I will be doing a drawing for it on September 11th.

Cool Purse!

Thank you for sharing the easy purse project. I just got my first sewing machine so it was a great project for me to try. My little town does not have any places to take classes so I am blundering through myself. It was nice to have a project that turned out the way it should have. I have made two purses so far and now my mom and my sis want me to make them one too. Thank you!

Hi Michelle: I love your purse design!!! It's so clever of you to make the pattern with a handle that ties together. I can relate to your finishing the bag before realizing it should have been turned sideways when the side seam was sewn. I can't tell you how many times I've been to the end of a sewing/quilting project only to realize I made a mistake a few steps back. Thank you for sharing that with us. It always seems that projects and tutorials on the web are shown with perfection. Many times that approach leaves me with the feeling that I always fall short with my results. I love that you show and talk about your thought process during each and every project you demonstrate. I learned to sew at an early age, and even though I sew less these days and opt to make projects from paper, I love your design and am giving this project a whirl. In my mind's eye I can envision putting together a patchwork and then cutting it to make the bag. Thanks again. Linda

What a fun and easy purse! I love your fabric and color choice. Thanks for sharing and inspiring. I'm going to dust off my sewing machine today and make one! Thanks again, Tisha from Texas
