Espresso Art

coffeetree.jpg

After a recent visit to Batdorf and Bronson's coffee shop in dowtown Olympia I was inspired to try my hand at painting with espresso. In this show, I explore painting with espresso, tea, and coffee grounds. Join me and see what you can make. To follow along, gather these materials:

  •  espresso shots
  • brewed tea
  • ground coffee beans
  • paper
  • paint brushes
  • heat gun (optional)
  • low-stick masking tape (optional)
  • metallic rubons (optional)

After the show, I experimented a bit more, creating a background with espresso for a collage. I then added images and text. Here is what I came up with...

If you like the eggs, hop on over to ArtChix. They have a ton of collage sheets that are great for creating art as well as other supplies that are hard to pass up!

Also, don't forget to check out the book Kaleidoscope: Ideas And Projects to Spark Your Creativity by Suzanne Simanaitis.

Your Loyal Viewer

I've been crafting with you for over a year and you've inspired me in many ways. Through you I learned about Etsy, Flickr, craft blogs, bookbinding, collage techniques, loom knitting, and more! I love your spirit and your generosity. Thanks for producing a great podcast. I'll be waiting for the next one.

Welcome back

Thank you so much for the new podcast! I loved both of your Espresso art items. Once again, I'm inspired to try something new. Welcome back, you've been missed. Not to rush you or anything, but I can't wait for your next podcast. Thanks, Tisha from Texas

coffee pages

I make handmade books, and I use coffee on the inside pages. I spray the paper with coffee, and put it on cookie sheets, and bake in the oven. I then iron the pages and make signatures out of them. The pages come out wrinkled and yellowed. A real vintage look and feel.

Coffee makes me happy!

I am so excited to see that you've attempted a painting with coffee! I love painting with coffee and have made a few handbags and wallets with coffee dyed fabric. The paint/dye I use is a bit thicker. I thicken it with cornstarch because it's easier for me to paint with. If you're careful while washing the items, the stain only fades slightly after washing. I typed up a tutorial explaining the steps for Craftster -http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=188530.msg1978212#msg1978212 and taped a couple videos showing the whole process from dyeing to assembling a little tote- http://craftyhandbags.blogspot.com/search/label/video%20tutorial I love your podcasts, and I'm so glad you are able to keep doing them.

Woo Hoo!!

Another podcast...excellent!! This looks fun...so now I'm off to steal my husbands espresso pods for the Tassimo to use for this technique. :-) Thanks for another great podcast!

Update

I tried the espresso painting technique...yes, I used the pods! :-) Here is what I did: http://smullis7.blogspot.com/2008/05/last-day-of-may.html.

This show was so good for me

This show was so good for me to see! I love the way you are open to creating, not just to create a certain object or image, but that you are willing to be truly creative, enjoying the process and open to seeing what happens. Sometimes I get too concerned with producing something that doesn't really come from me, but rather looks like things other people make. That takes quite a lot of the fun out of things, I think. I'm going to try to be braver about enjoying the experience rather than concentrating on following directions to make something not so original. Oh, and "Kaleidoscope" has been #1 on my Amazon wishlist for several weeks now--you've convinced me to go ahead and buy it. Thanks for the great episode.
